Glossary of Gender Definitions

The following table lists the meanings of the “S” (Sex) column of info for a horse.

cColtA male horse or pony under 4 years of age that has not been gelded (castrated).
fFillyA female horse or pony under 4 years of age.
gGeldingA male horse or pony of any age that has been gelded (castrated).
hHorseA male horse that is 4 years or older that has not been gelded (castrated).
mMareA female horse or pony that is 4 years or older.

Here are some more gender terms used in horse racing.

StallionA mature male horse capable of producing offspring.
In some countries a "stallion" is the same as "horse" meaning a male horse that is 4 years or older that has not been gelded (castrated).
SireAn adult male horse is called a "stud" or "sire" when used in breeding.
StudAn adult male horse is called a "stud" or "sire" when used in breeding.
FoalA female or male horse or pony under 1 year of age. A female foal is known as a "Filly Foal", a male foal is known as a "Colt Foal".
WeanlingA foal that has been weaned. Foals are typically weaned at 5-6 months of age.
YearlingA female or male horse that is between 1 and 2 years old. A female yearling is known as a "Yearling Filly", a male yearling that has not been gelded (castrated) is known as a "Yearling Colt".
